Shab e Barat

The 15th night of the month of Sha’ban is called Shab-e-Barat. Shab means night, Baraat means salvation, and Shab-e-Barat means the night of deliverance from sins, salvation from sins comes through repentance. This night is also named the night of mercy and the night of forgiveness. On Shab-e-Barat, Muslims repent and by the mercy of Allah Almighty, many Muslims are saved from hell. Shab-e-Barat is a night of asking forgiveness and repentance for one’s sins before Allah. The vow to do good deeds that night and the vow to stay away from evils can lead to the removal of rust from the sins in the heart.

The great virtue and importance of Shab-e-Barat has been mentioned in the hadiths, out of which four hadiths are presented.

Remember Allah Almighty whole night on 15 of Shaban:

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali that the Holy Prophet says: When the night comes in the middle of Sha’ban, one should recite the Holy Qur’an while waking up at night and engage in Nawafil, and fast. Because on that night Allah with His attributes of mercy and compassion and kindness draws attention to humanity. And the preaching of God is that there is someone who asks for forgiveness that I may forgive him, someone who asks me to fulfill his question, someone who asks for sustenance that I may give him lawful and abundant sustenance. And these voices continue until morning.

Prayers are not rejected on Shab-e-Barat:

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (SAW) says: The supplication is not rejected in five nights (it is definitely accepted) on Friday night, the first night of the month of Rajab, the night of mid-Sha’ban, the nights of Eid.

Who is not forgiven on Shab-e-Barat:

Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) said: Spend the 15th night of Sha’ban in worship and fast during the day. Every sin is forgiven on this night. He accepts the prayers of all except the wicked woman and the polytheist.

Shab-e-Barat is a cause of Forgiveness of countless people:

Umm Al-Mumineen Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqah (SAW) says: One night I did not find the Prophet (SAW) on my bed, so I went out in search of the Prophet (SAW). I found him in the Garden of Al-Baqi ‘. The Prophet (SAW) looked at me with his head held high and said, “Allah appears in the sky on the middle of Sha’ban and forgives more people than the hair of the goats of the tribe club.” ۔

What to do at Shab-e-Barat?

From these Hadiths, it is clear that Shab-e-Barat is a blessed and glorious night. Although all the Hadiths in the collection of Hadiths about Shab-e-Barat are weak, their chain of transmission is not valid according to the principle of muhaddithin. But since these are many hadiths and different Companions (For example Abu Bakr Siddiq, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘Aas, Abu Tha’labah al-Khushni, ‘Uthman ibn Abi al-‘Aas, and’ Aa’ishah Siddiqah, may Allah be pleased with them all, etc.).

All these hadiths as a whole are an argument against a person. Who thinks that nothing has been proven regarding the virtue of the night of the fifteenth of Sha’ban. For this reason, in most of the religious circles of the Islamic world, special arrangements have been made to worship, supplicate and ask for forgiveness during this night. What should be done on this special occasion? These are summarized below:

Worship at Shab-e-Barat:

Keep few things in mind while worshiping on Shab-e-Barat:

  • It is better to perform nawafil worship in solitude and at home. Therefore, worship Shab-e-Barat at home, not in the mosque۔
  • There is no specific method of worship on this night. Therefore, Zikr and recitation, supererogatory prayers, Tasbeeh prayers, etc. can be performed.
  • One should worship according to one’s courage and strength. It is not right to be so awake that a person becomes ill.
  • The obligatory prayers should be arranged throughout the year. It is a false idea to consider oneself deserving of Paradise only by performing supererogatory acts of worship on the night of Baraat. Thus, Allah Almighty can forgive whom He wills.
  • Some people say that if two rak’ats of prayers are offered in a certain way on this night. Then all the prayers that have been made up will be forgiven. This is completely untrue.

Keep Fast on the 15th of Shaban:

As it is mentioned above in Hadiths having the fast of Shab-e-Barat has great importance in Islam. Therefore, it is better to keep fast on the 15th of Shaban. This fast will also be rewarded according to Allah Almighty.

Conclusion:

Shab-e-Barat is the name of thought for the betterment of this world and the hereafter. This night is a blessing for us to tremble in remembrance of Allah. Shab-e-Barat is an endless sea of God’s blessings in which one can dive and irrigate one’s mind. But in this era, on the contrary, we dedicate this night to works like firecrackers and fireworks.  May Allah Almighty grant the entire Ummah the ability to walk on the straight path and protect it from innovations and superstitions and enrich it with the spirit of following the Sunnah! Amen and Amen!
